Legislative elections allow citizens to elect the deputies who will represent them by sitting in the National Assembly. They take place every 5 years, except for government reshuffles and dissolution of the National Assembly.

How are MPs elected?

The legislative elections are held according to the majority vote in 2 rounds, to be elected, the candidate must collect more than 50% of the votes in the 1st round, and at least a quarter of the votes of registered voters. In the second round, the candidate obtaining a relative majority can be elected.

A deputy is elected in his constituency, France has, since 2012, 577 constituencies, in metropolitan France, in Overseas France and for the French abroad.

To run in the legislative elections, you must:
- Be of French nationality
- Be at least 18 years old
- Enjoy their civic rights and not be under a measure of ineligibility
- Not to hold any other office

What is the role of an MP?

Politician representing the territorial communities of his constituency, he is nevertheless an actor of the national policy, he must study the bills, debate the projects before the Assembly and the Parliament with the senators.

Indeed, the deputy's mission is to study, propose or vote on laws, he is, with his counterparts, a control force of the government. The deputies debate in the parliament the different bills, initiated by the government or the deputies themselves.

They can, by their votes, validate or invalidate a bill, proposed by the government. The deputies are both a force of proposal and a force of opposition, both during the votes and during the sessions of questions to the government.

The National Assembly with 577 deputies, shares with the Senate the legislative power, and can therefore grant or not its confidence to the government, as well as vote a motion of censure.

What are the salaries and benefits of MPs?

An MP receives a base monthly allowance of about 5600€ to which is added a residence allowance of about 170€ and a function allowance of nearly 1500€.

In addition, deputies receive a transportation credit for air travel, and the National Assembly pays for train travel from their constituency to the capital, particularly for meetings at the National Assembly.

The deputies are covered by parliamentary immunity, to ensure their independence.
