If you follow the tradition of spring cleaning, you have probably realized that beyond the simple cleaning of the house, there is also the problem of storage and available space. To help you find a tidy home, we have listed for you 3 tips to save space in your closets and drawers.
1- Sort unused items by type
Any storage expert will tell you: step number one in clearing out and gaining space in your home is to sort through the items that accumulate there.
Target the corners of the house where papers, magazines and books waiting to be read pile up. Throw away flyers and coupons that have passed their expiration date.
For books, ask yourself if you need to keep a particular book or if you can donate it to a charity or library.
Sort out the ones you have read and don't want to keep but also the ones you can't read. In fact, if you still haven't opened a book several months after you bought it, you'll probably never read it.
Do the same for other categories of items such as clothing and accessories.
According to Marie Kondo, the papess of tidying, it's more efficient to tidy your home by type of item than by room, for example: papers one day, books the next, and clothes another day.
Also, for this sorting to be really effective, you must of course agree to part without regret with items you don't use.
2- Use recycled storage boxes
Once you've sorted through your possessions, the second space-saving tip for your home is to use boxes for storage.
However, there's no need to buy brand new storage boxes from the store. In fact, these containers that are supposed to help you tidy up your home can quickly add up to a hefty budget if you have a lot of items to store.
To avoid these unnecessary expenses, consider recycling your shoeboxes. They are the perfect size to fit in your closets or in drawers.
So you can store small accessories in them that tend to get scattered like socks, tights or belts.
Don't throw away the lids of those same shoeboxes either. They can come in handy for collecting small bottles like spice jars in the kitchen cupboard or vials of essential oils in your medicine cabinet.
3- Adopt clever storage methods
Another space-saving tip for your home, especially in drawers and storage boxes, is to store clothes vertically rather than stacking them.
While we're used to piles of t-shirts or sweaters, it's more efficient to store those clothes side by side, arranged vertically. This technique from the Marie Kondo method also works for storing socks, scarves and scarves.
To better understand this vertical folding technique, we invite you to watch the video below. In it, Marie Kondo gives a demonstration that will revolutionize the way you fold and store your underwear:
On the other hand, for bulkier accessories that can't be folded like handbags, the storage papess gives another space-saving tip.
Simply store them inside each other, from the largest to the smallest, like Russian dolls leaving the shoulder strap sticking out on the outside to find the one you want to use more easily.
This trick prevents your handbags of all sizes from piling up messily in your closet, of course taking up a lot of space.
