If you work on a computer, you are probably used to cleaning your screen and keyboard. But have you thought about removing the dust that accumulates inside your computer? We explain why and how to dust your computer.
You may not know it, but dust is one of your computer's worst enemies.
All computers have fans designed to cool components with fresh air. Unfortunately, these fans suck in dust along with the air. The dust settles on the components and traps heat.
That's why you should definitely dust your computer from time to time. Of course, you won't be able to completely remedy the problem, but you can reduce the harmful consequences of dust by following our tips below.
If you let dust accumulate inside your computer, it can cause overheating.
Before it gets to the point of failure, dust can interfere with the proper functioning of your computer. If you notice that your computer is slow or noisy when it's running, dust may be the problem.
Therefore, you should dust the computer without delay to see if its performance improves.
To eliminate dust inside a computer and not just on the surface, it is not enough to use a vacuum cleaner, duster or microfiber cloth.
Even if using a vacuum cleaner seems like a good idea, don't use it because :
- it generates static electricity that can damage components
- Too much suction power can cause the fans to spin and damage them.
The best method to dust your computer is to use a dry air spray also known as air bomb.
These sprays are easily found in computer stores, office supply stores or on the internet. The price varies of course depending on the capacity, but it is possible to buy them online from 5 €.
Once you have equipped yourself with a dry air spray, here is the method to dust your computer :
- turn off your PC or laptop
- locate the air vents on the device
- for a laptop, hold the computer in one hand and the spray can in the other
- Always hold the can upright when spraying
- Spray air towards the grille, a little at an angle to get the dust out
- keep spraying until no more dust comes out.
Caution: Do not direct the air flow directly in front of the grille. The air should not go directly on the fans to avoid damaging them.
Since this cleaning is quite messy, stand outside or away from people and objects that fear dust.
Once the dust grains or sheep have been removed from your computer, don't forget to vacuum the floor.
It is recommended to dust your computer on average every two months.
How often you should do this cleaning depends on your work environment.
If your environment is dusty because you have pets or there is work near your office, you should clean the computer more often, about every 6 weeks.
Also keep in mind that this cleaning is even more important when it's hot, such as during summer heat waves. When the ambient temperature climbs, the fans need to run well to cool your computer's components.
After this dusting, you'll probably notice that the fans react differently at startup. As a general rule, they spin better and faster. The components are better cooled and your computer shows better performance.
Don't hesitate to draw your air bomb every couple of months! By doing this dusting regularly, you'll extend the life of your computer.
