Did you know that radio is the medium that reaches the largest audience in the world? Even in the age of the Internet, this relatively simple and inexpensive technology reaches listeners in the farthest reaches of the planet.
In developing countries, more than 75% of households own at least one radio receiver. This medium thus constitutes an incomparable vector of information, debate, culture and transmission of knowledge for many individuals, regardless of their level of literacy and degree of participation in public life.
Since 2012, World Radio Day or WRD is an opportunity to celebrate radio as a medium, but also to increase international cooperation among broadcasters and to promote access to information, Freedom of Expression and pluralism on the airwaves.
Every February 13, all radio stations are invited to participate in this event.
The date chosen for World Radio Day commemorates the creation of United Nations Radio on February 13, 1946.
This world day is indeed organized by UNESCO but mobilizes all the institutions linked to the United Nations.
World Radio Day is dedicated to a different theme each year. It is the subject of a specially dedicated website (link below) and a flagship event held at UNESCO headquarters on February 13.
The theme chosen for WDD 2023 is Radio and Peace.
Radio in conflict prevention and peacebuilding
Support for independent radio stations
