A new heroine is arriving on France 3 in the Sunday night police series slot. Starting from Sunday, April 9, 2023, the public channel will indeed broadcast a British fiction entitled "Annika". Season 1 consists of 6 episodes and France 3 will air three per evening.
In the very first episode, Annika Strandhed has just been promoted to Commander. She returns to her hometown of Glasgow, Scotland to lead a new specialized unit of the Marine Criminal Brigade.
Once again, this Sunday night series on France 3 promises to take us on a journey through police investigations, in the same way that Miss Fisher takes us to Australia in the 1920s and Brokenwood to the wild landscapes of New Zealand with the country music beloved by hero Mike Shepherd!
In this time slot, it is usually Inspector Barnaby who accompanies viewers in Great Britain, with his sidekick Winter. While Inspector Barnaby's investigations take place in a bucolic England, with its picturesque villages, cottages, and pubs, you won't find these rural landscapes and nostalgic scent in "Annika".
On Sunday evenings, Annika succeeds the series Murdoch Mysteries, which takes place in Victorian-era Canada, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Expect a radical change of scenery and era as, in this new series, the eponymous investigator is tasked with solving unexplained murders committed on the Scottish shores. For her first investigation as commander, a body is found in the river with a harpoon lodged in its skull.
This enigmatic and brilliant policewoman conducts her investigation at sea and shares her workspace with Michael McAndrews, Blair Ferguson, and Tyrone Clarke. In order to solve all kinds of mysteries, she can rely on her cop instinct but also on the literary and historical references she draws from Nordic sagas. This investigator, who has Norwegian origins, loves this literature, even if her team doesn't share her passion!
Fans of detective novels who are faithful to the Sunday evening police fictions on France 3 will undoubtedly appreciate this new investigator. Annika, played very accurately by actress Nicola Walker (who already played the lead role of Cassie in the police series Unforgotten).
Like many heroines of TV series, Commander Strandhed must juggle between her work and personal life. In this first season, she has a lot to do between her new position and her daughter Morgan in the midst of adolescence crisis.
Viewers (especially female viewers!) will surely identify with this single mother character, especially since Annika shares her feelings with the audience, opening up to the camera with a good dose of irony.
This stylistic effect, where viewers become the confidants of the heroine, is one of the singularities of this British fiction. There is no doubt that you will enjoy following the investigations of this atypical commander, at the pace of three episodes every Sunday!
