Starting Thursday, January 6, M6 airs season 2 of the Marc Cherry-created series, Why Women Kill. Get ready for many changes compared to season 1! In these new episodes, the series reinvents itself by changing characters and time. We invite you to discover some of the surprises that season 2 has in store for you.
A proven recipe
Airing in the spring of 2020 on M6, the first season of Why Women Kill had created a surprise. This series imagined by the creator of Desperate Housewives followed the fate of three deceived women in three different eras.
As dark as it was funny, the first season had broken audience records on M6 during the first confinement, gathering an average of 4.5 million viewers in 2020.
In season 2, too, Marc Cherry's fans will find all the ingredients that made Desperate Housewives and Why Women Kill so successful: great Writing and directing combined with an explosive mix of sex, humor and murder.
A new plot
Why Women Kill explores the journey of women whose lives are turned upside down by a betrayal that will drive them to murder.
But the originality of this series is that it changes characters and plots each season.
Season 1 had the luxury of telling three different stories in three different time periods: the 1960s, the 1980s and the present day.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Marc Cherry had to simplify Season 2 and settle for one story set in one timeline, in the post-war era.
In Hollywood in 1949, Alma Fillcot, a modest housewife, dreams of joining the very elitist Garden Club chaired by Rita Castillo, a woman she admires for her elegance.
For her part, Rita waits for the death of her rich husband Carlo Castillo to inherit and live with her young lover, while a serial killer is rampant in the neighborhood.
A new cast
For Season 2, the Why Women Kill series is getting a makeover with a change in atmosphere and cast.
The main performers are Lana Parrilla as Rita and Allison Tolman as Alma.
The story focuses on the misadventures of Alma, a shy and awkward housewife who manages to remain optimistic despite the cruelty of the world. She is played by Allison Tolman, previously seen in Fargo and Emergence.
As for Lana Parrilla (who was revealed in the role of the evil queen in Once upon a time on M6), she is perfect in the skin of an ultra glamorous vamp of the 40s. Her charismatic character becomes more and more endearing with each episode.
Also in the cast of this season 2 Nick Frost, B.K. Cannon, Jordane Christie, Matthew Daddario and Veronica Falcón.
A new decor
Season 2 of Why Women Kill takes us back to 1949 to analyze all that a woman like Alma is willing to do to find her place in society.
This uneventful housewife wants more than anything to get a spot in the local garden club and see her daughter married.
The series is now set in the 1940s, and it's a great choice because this time period offers the plot great sets and costumes.
It also allows for themes of class struggle, self-acceptance and bodyshaming.
The series is undergoing a transformation, but what doesn't change is Marc Cherry's talent for crafting very well-made episodes and painting subtle portraits of women.
This second season has actually ranked among the ten most viewed series on the American platform Paramount+. A season 3 has already been ordered.
Season 2, which arrives on M6 from January 6 at 9:05 pm, is a little gem that you absolutely must discover.
