Halloween Craft: Make A Bat Tree

October 31 is a time for trick-or-treating, but also for various crafts and creative projects with the kids. If you are looking for a Halloween craft idea, I suggest you discover how to create a bat tree with simple branches and black cardboard.

Material

To make a decorative bat tree, you need:

an armful of willow branches or stems
a vase or carafe that is a little high
small pebbles or grains of rice
cardboard for the template
2 sheets of black cardboard
1 sheet of orange cardboard
a grey pencil
a white pencil
a pair of scissors
strong glue or very thin wire

Method

Below we detail the step-by-step method to create a special Halloween bat tree :

1- Start by preparing the support for your decorative Halloween tree by picking branches and gathering them into a bouquet in a tall vase.

2- Fill the vase or jug with small pebbles or grains of rice to about a third of its height, so you can prick the branches into it.

3- Then prepare the cardboard templates that will allow you to make the cut-outs in the colored cardboard.

Note: these templates are shaped like half a bat or half a maple leaf because you'll be folding the paper in half lengthwise and cutting it into double thickness.

You can either draw these templates based on the ones below, or use the printable bat templates available online (see link at the bottom of the page).

For this project, I made several sizes of bats from 5 to 8 cm wingspan.

4- Use the templates to transfer the half bat or half maple leaf shape onto the black and orange card stock folded in half.

5- All you have to do now is cut out the decorations and unfold them to get a bat and maple leaf shape.

6- Decorate your bouquet of branches with the cardboard decorations by gluing them with a strong glue dot or by making them hold with a very thin wire pricked in the cardboard.

Suggested presentation

This bat tree will look great on the table of your Halloween buffet.

You can also put it in the corner of your living room or entryway to complete the spooky decoration of your October 31 party.

Happy Halloween to all!
