Making Natural Fertilizer With Banana Peel.
The next time you eat a banana, think of your green plants and keep the peel! The skin of this fruit is rich in minerals such as magnesium, iron, and potassium. So, make the most of it by using banana peel as natural fertilizer! This recipe is both economical and ecological, with only advantages. We will explain how to do it in pictures.
Ingredients
Making fertilizer with banana peel has the double advantage of providing a 100% natural and very economical fertilizer.
To make this homemade natural fertilizer, you only need two ingredients:
• 1 ripe banana peel
• 1 liter of rain or filtered water
Note: for this recipe, it is preferable to use rainwater as it has an ideal pH; failing that, use filtered water rather than tap water to avoid the presence of limestone.
If you are a fan of natural gardening, preferably use an organic banana (but this is not essential). In any case, use a yellow banana peel, i.e. ripe. It should not be green or black, otherwise the obtained fertilizer will be less effective because it will be less rich in nutrients.
Equipment
Making fertilizer with banana peel is very simple and requires only a few tools. You probably have all the necessary utensils in your kitchen, namely:
• 2 bottles with a capacity of 1 liter
• 1 funnel
• 1 pair of scissors
You can use glass or plastic bottles interchangeably. Choose them if possible with a wide neck to facilitate the first step of preparation.
Preparing the banana.
The first step to making natural fertilizer with banana peel is to prepare the banana peel.
If you haven't already, eat the banana and save the peel.
Using scissors, cut the banana into small pieces of about 1 cm in width.
Make sure to cut thin and regular strips as they need to be small enough to fit through the bottle neck.
Preparation of banana macerate.
To make natural fertilizer with banana peel, simply soak the pieces of peel in water.
1- Place the banana pieces you have cut into one of the two bottles.
2- Fill the bottle with rainwater or filtered water using the funnel.
The pieces of banana peel that were initially at the bottom of the bottle will start to float to the surface of the preparation.
3- All that's left is to close the bottle and wait...
Banana peel fertilizer finishes
To make natural fertilizer with banana peels, you must not be too hasty. You need to soak the pieces of peel for at least 48 hours so that the nutrients in the banana peel can pass into the water. Your fertilizer, also called banana water or banana purée, is ready when the pieces of peel and liquid start to brown. You can then filter your preparation into the second bottle. Simply water your plants with the banana water without diluting it and throw the banana pieces into the compost. This natural and zero-waste fertilizer will surprise you with its effectiveness on tropical plants and flowering plants! You don't need to dilute it in watering like commercial liquid fertilizer.
Good to know
Because it is rich in nutrients such as potassium, banana-based fertilizer helps stimulate flowering and fruiting. You can use this banana water to bathe your orchids, water your tropical plants, boost the flowering of your green plants such as spathiphyllum, and water the flowers on your balcony such as geraniums and roses...
