Gas And Electricity: Understanding The Energy Voucher In 6 Questions

Since January 1, 2018, the social energy tariffs (TPP and TSS) have been replaced by the energy voucher, a state aid intended for low-income households. This scheme has evolved since its inception. Here are the updated details for 2024.

1- What does this assistance consist of?

The energy voucher helps low-income households pay for their energy expenses, such as electricity, gas, fuel oil, firewood, or other fuels used for heating or hot water production.

It can also be used to pay heating charges in approved residential homes and to finance certain energy renovation works carried out by professionals certified as "Recognized Environmental Guarantor" (RGE).

2- What is its amount?

In 2024, the amount of the energy voucher ranges from €48 to €277, depending on the reference tax income (RFR) and household composition. To be eligible, the RFR per consumption unit (CU) must be less than €11,000. The calculation of CUs is as follows:

1 person = 1 CU
2nd person = 0.5 CU
Each additional person = 0.3 CU

3- Is it more advantageous than social energy tariffs?

The energy voucher provides direct financial assistance and can be used for various types of energy, including wood and fuel oil, which was not the case with the old social tariffs. Additionally, it can finance energy renovation work, thus offering increased flexibility to beneficiaries.

4- What are the associated advantages?

Recipients of the energy voucher enjoy certain benefits, such as:

Exemption from service activation fees in case of moving.
80% reduction on technician call-out fees for meter reopening after a payment default.
Guarantee of maintaining electrical power during the winter truce.

5- What steps need to be taken?

The distribution of the energy voucher is generally automatic for eligible households, based on available tax information. However, in 2024, a specific portal has been set up to allow newly eligible households or those who have not received the voucher automatically to apply online until December 31, 2024.

6- Can professionals refuse this method of payment?

No. All energy suppliers and RGE-certified professionals are required to accept the energy voucher for eligible expenses.
To pay a bill, simply send the voucher by mail or use it online on the supplier's website if this option is available.
